My name is Marlen Sarmiento. I decided to major in Digital Design!
I’ve grown very passionate in the design field. I’ve been eager to learn the standards and have a better understanding of the behind-the-scenes when creating various designs. There are so many opportunities offered in this pathway. Whether it is the process of 2D/3D motion, working with video/photography, graphic design, and UX/UI design, I enjoy the journey of creating through an established structure and set of rules. It allows a deep understanding of the core concepts while taking the opportunity to amplify and even bend these rules to build something new and exciting. I’m always growing, learning, and uncovering new things as I navigate through my studies in Digital Design.
I’ve become much more appreciative of design around me no matter how small or unnoticeable it might be. After learning about the various movements from the Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, Pop Art to eventually Postmodern, I’ve learned that design is found everywhere and how these movements still leave a big influence today.
Coming from a STEM background, I didn’t have a lot of opportunities to explore this type of creative path. My resources were limited but I decided to take a leap in college and pursue a new unexpected direction. I became interested in the creative process of bringing something to life through graphics and visuals collecting linear and non-linear research, collecting different types of data, brainstorming different solutions, and implementing this process into various software and techniques. I have learned so much so far as I’ve overcome different challenges. I make sure to make the most of my studies to better prepare myself when I graduate in hopes of not just pursuing my passion but to support my loved ones as a first-generation student. Overall, I’m excited about my current and future studies!
